USC Upstate Adds Sydow for 2019 Season

Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate interim tennis head coach Tim McLane has announced the addition of Frederick Sydow to the men's program and will join the Spartans for the upcoming 2019 season.

Sydow is a native of Oranjestad, Aruba and comes from a family of collegiate tennis players. His brother, Patrick, is currently a freshman at the University of Memphis while his father played at Georgia Tech.

"We are excited to have Frederick coming in to join us in January, just in time to kick off our first season in the Big South," said McLane. "Frederick comes from a family of high-level tennis players and has a good amount of experience playing internationally."

Sydow has played primarily on the international circuit ranking as high as No. 952 in the ITF world rankings. His highest Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) was 11.89. Sydow advanced to the Round of 16 or better in three ITF competitions in Aruba, Mexico and Venezuela. He competed in the singles quarterfinals and doubles semifinals of the Grade 4 ITF Aruba. Sydow also made it to the round of 16 in both singles and doubles at the Grade B3 Mexico. He played in the singles quarterfinals of the Grade 5 Venezuela.

"He is going to help provide some depth to our team and brings with him a great work ethic that will help push the rest of the team," McLane said. "I know that he is fired up and ready to get his first taste of college tennis."

Sydow competed for Aruba in the Youth South American Games in Chile while placing third in pre-qualifying events for the Aruba Junior Davis Cup team in 2016 and 2017.

He is the son of Franz and Pilar Sydow.
