Holmes Named Second Team Preseason All-Conference, Big South Men’s Basketball Preseason Poll Announced

Charlotte, N.C. – USC Upstate senior guard Deion Holmes has been tabbed Big South Second Team Preseason All-Conference as the league announced the men's basketball preseason honors and poll on Tuesday afternoon during Big South Media Day held at the Renaissance Suites Hotel.

USC Upstate received a total of 64 points in the preseason poll and has been predicted to finish in 11th place.

Holmes turned in a career year for the Spartans in 2017-18 averaging a career-best 15.5 points per game while appearing in all 32 contests. The Chesnee, S.C. native had 21 games scoring in double-figures including seven with 20 or more points and two with 30-plus. Holmes recorded his first career double-double versus Lipscomb with a career-high 39 points and 12 rebounds. He later added 34 points against Stetson. He concluded the season scoring in double-figures in 11 of the last 12 games. Holmes joined the 1,000 point club last season and enters the year with 1,153.

Under the direction of first-year head coach Dave Dickerson, USC Upstate returns six letterwinners from last season including three starters in Holmes, and seniors Malik Moore and Jure Span. The Spartans also welcome eight newcomers in Dalvin White, Everette Hammond, Brandon Martin, Bryson Mozone, Ross Ryan, Jordan Furlough, Josh Aldrich and Nevin Zink.

Defending Big South Tournament champion Radford is the favorite to win the conference this season after garnering 28 first-place votes and 357 points. Winthrop and Hampton each collected two first-place votes and were second and third, respectively, with 280 and 253 points. Campbell and Charleston Southern follow in fourth and fifth place at 239 and 231 points. Gardner-Webb picked up the final first-place vote and was projected sixth with 230 points.

High Point was seventh with 192 points and UNC Asheville eighth at 151 points. Presbyterian College (9th, 104 points) and Longwood (10th, 77 points) round out the preseason poll.

Campbell's Chris Clemons has been picked as the Big South Men's Basketball Preseason Player of the Year.

USC Upstate tips off its 2018-19 season on Tuesday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. on the road against South Carolina.
