Indianapolis – USC Upstate track & field student-athletes Sarah Hill, Kennedy Holton, Tanner Saunders and Noah Walker have qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary Track and Field Championship, it was announced today. The East Preliminary Championship will take place in Tampa, Fla. at USF Track & Field Stadium on May 24-26, 2018.
The four qualifying student-athletes are the most in USC Upstate history. This marks the second consecutive year that the program has been represented at the East Preliminary Championship as Destinie Sykes scored a 45th place finish in the triple jump last year.
"Tanner, Noah, Sarah and Kennedy have put in the work this year and it has paid off," head coach Carson Blackwelder said. "We are excited to see what they can do at the next level."
Hill will run in the women's 100-meter dash as the 35th seed thanks to her school-record, and race-winning, time of 11.49 at the ASUN Outdoor Track and Field Championships last weekend.
Holton caps her senior year with a regional appearance as she turned in a time of 13.54 to earn the 48th seed in the 100-meter hurdles. Holton's time was also a new school record.
Saunders scored a third place finish in the men's 400-meter hurdles at the ASUN Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a time of 52.29. He is the 47th seed in the event.
Walker was the runner-up in the men's 400-meter hurdles at the ASUN Outdoor Track and Field Championships last weekend as he recorded a school-record time of 51.71. He holds the 28th-fastest time in the event among qualifying student-athletes.
Saunders and Walker will get things started as the first round of the men's 400-meter hurdles kicks off running events for the weekend at 4:30 p.m. on May 24. Hill will run in the women's 100-meter dash first round later that day at 6:55 p.m. On May 25, Holton will run in the 100-meter hurdles with a scheduled start time of 5 p.m.
