SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate volleyball team (6-11, 1-4 A-Sun) dropped a 3-0 decision to Atlantic Sun Conference foe Lipscomb (9-8, 6-0 A-Sun) by scores of 25-21, 25-21 and 25-20 Friday inside the Hodge Center for the Spartans' Senior Night.
At the start of the match, Upstate recognized its three seniors Emily Bingham (St. Petersburg, Fla.), Mindy Quimby (Keenesburg, Colo.) and Emily Sanders (Sullivan, Ill.). Bingham transferred to Upstate as a junior and has started for the Spartans in her two years. Quimby and Sanders are both four-year starters for the Spartans. The three were accompanied by their parents and honored with a video presentation looking back on their time with the Spartan volleyball program.
On the night, Upstate was led by a pair of double-doubles from freshmen Kayla Eversgerd (Breese, Ill.) and Lexi Gober (Edwardsville, Ill.). Eversgerd tallied 12 kills and collected 11 digs for her fourth double-double of the season, while Gober also registered her fourth double-dip on the year with 32 assists and 10 digs.
Sophomore Kayla McAvoy (Boiling Springs, S.C.) was second on the team for the Spartans, posting 11 kills. Bingham helped the Upstate effort with nine kills and seven digs, while freshmen Jaina Jackson (Huntley, Ill.) and Shannon Weiss (Highland, Ill.) each added four kills.
The Bison were led by a trio of hitters, reaching double-figures. Jewell Dobson recorded a match-high 17 kills, while Lauren Ford had 16 kills to go along with six digs; Kaycee Green contributed with 13 kills. Caitlin Dotson anchored LU with a double-double, handing out 42 assists and scooping up 12 digs.
Defensively, the Spartans were paced by Sanders with 20 digs. Lipscomb's Stephanie Rex edged the Upstate Libero, gathering a match-high 21 digs. Quimby helped the Spartan cause, recording 10 digs, while LU's Megan Stout had 15 digs.
With the win, Lipscomb remains undefeated in A-Sun play, sitting atop the conference standings alongside Florida Gulf Coast at 6-0 in Atlantic Sun competition.
The Spartans return to A-Sun action Saturday, hosting league newcomer Northern Kentucky for a 3 p.m. match.
