SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate volleyball team (6-10) defeated Savannah State (0-19) 3-0 in nonconference action Tuesday night at the Hodge Center by scores of 25-5, 25-15 and 25-17.
The Spartans were led by senior Emily Bingham (St. Petersburg, Fla.) with a match-high 13 kills. Sophomore Kayla McAvoy (Boiling Springs, S.C.) was second on the team with nine kills. Freshman Lexi Gober (Edwardsville, Ill.) recorded her third double-double of the season, handing out 32 assists and collecting 11 digs.
Defensively, Upstate senior Emily Sanders (Sullivan, Ill.) posted a match-high 23 digs, while fellow senior Mindy Quimby (Keenesburg, Colo.) scooped up seven digs to go along with three kills. Freshman Kayla Eversgerd (Breese, Ill.) continued to balance offense and defense, posting seven kills and five digs on the night. Freshman Shannon Weiss (Highland, Ill.) added four kills and three digs.
"It's always nice to get a win," said Upstate head coach Jennifer Calloway. "It was nice to see us put some other people on the floor and let some of the freshmen get some experience and work on some plays we may use this weekend, heading into some big conference play. Tonight we definitely saw some people step up. We saw some girls make some really big plays, so I think that's exciting. It's always exciting to see who is going to step-up each game so the line-ups may change throughout the season, especially in conference play. Tonight was a big factor for that."
Savannah State was led by Jasmine Waite and Bryana Gadis with seven and six kills, respectively. Ashlee Butler dished out 16 assists for the Tiger offensive, while Bridgette Stephens anchored the SSU defense with 13 digs. Gadis also contributed nine digs, while Waite added six.
Upstate's senior trio led the Spartans in serving against the Tigers, registering Upstate's nine service aces. Sanders recorded a match-high four aces for the Spartans, while Bingham tallied three and Quimby had two.
The Spartans return to action Friday, hosting Atlantic Sun Conference opponent Lipscomb at 7 p.m. for Upstate's Senior Night.
