DeLAND, Fla. – The USC Upstate volleyball team owned a 20-15 advantage in the first set, but the squad was unable to hold on as Stetson claimed a 3-0 victory (25-22, 25-19, 25-23) in Atlantic Sun Conference action inside the Edmunds Center.
Emily Sanders paced the Spartans (6-13, 2-5 A-Sun) on Saturday as she tallied 29 assists and 22 digs. Mindy Quimby and Morgan Thomas tied for the lead with nine kills, while Quimby also recorded nine digs.
Upstate took an early 6-1 lead in the first set after a kill by Quimby. The Spartans led by as many as six before the Hatters (6-13, 1-6) began their comeback late in the set. With the visiting Spartans ahead 20-15, Stetson rattled off seven consecutive points to take a 22-20 advantage.
Upstate was able to tie the match at 22-all thanks to back-to-back kills by Kayla McAvoy. However, the Hatters earned the next three points to take the first set, 25-22.
Stetson led wire-to-wire in the second set, leading by as many as nine at 20-11, en route to a 25-19 victory.
Upstate battled in the third set to climb within two after trailing by five, at 23-18. After a kill by Thomas, the Spartans trailed by just one point (24-23). Stetson was able to take the set, 25-23, after a kill Kaylee Ream.
Three different Hatters recorded double-doubles Saturday. Kaley Melville led the team with 15 kills and also tallied 12 digs. Meanwhile, Kaylee Ream recorded 13 kills and 12 digs and Alisha Hoffman posted 14 assists and had 10 digs.
The Spartans close out their three-match road-swing through the state of Florida tomorrow at Bethune-Cookman.
