Spartanburg, S.C. – Owning its best seed in its fourth tournament appearance, the No. 2 USC Upstate softball team will open play in the A-Sun Tournament Thursday morning at 10:00 a.m. against the winner of Wednesday's game between Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson.
The A-Sun Tournament is being hosted by Lipscomb at Draper Diamond in Nashville, Tenn., May 8-11. Two first round games will be played on Wednesday with four games on Thursday and three on Friday leading up to Championship Saturday. The double elimination tournament will conclude with either a single game on Saturday if the team coming out of the winner's bracket wins the first game on Saturday. A second game will be played to determine the conference champion on Saturday if the team coming out of the loser's bracket wins the first game of the day on Saturday.
Upstate is the No. 2 seed in the A-Sun Tournament, missing out on the regular season championship and the No. 1 seed by a half game to North Florida. The No. 2 seed is the highest the Spartans have been seeded in the A-Sun Tournament, improving on the No. 3 seed they secured each of the last two years and the No. 4 seed in 2010 in Upstate's first appearance in the A-Sun Championship.
Upstate owns a 37-9 overall record heading into the A-Sun Tournament. The Spartans finished the A-Sun season with a strong 17-6 mark, having had four league games rained. Upstate fell out of first place when North Florida took a 1-0 victory at Stetson last Week to improve to 18-6 in the league, claiming the championship by half a game.
North Florida is the No. 1 seed in the A-Sun Tournament and is making its first conference championship appearance since becoming eligible in 2008. Upstate is the second seed in the tournament and is followed by No. 3 Florida Gulf Coast, No. 4 Lipscomb, No. 5 Kennesaw State and No. 6 Stetson.
