Spartanburg, S.C. – Hitting at a .358 clip, the USC Upstate softball team leads all NCAA Division I softball teams in batting average in the latest statistical ranking report released by the NCAA Monday evening. In addition, after posting a 4-0 week last week which included a three-game sweep of A-Sun foe Stetson, the USC Upstate softball team remained No. 37 for the second consecutive week in the latest RPI ranking released by the NCAA Monday.
Upstate was ranked 37th in last week's RPI ranking, which was the second of the season released by the NCAA. After picking up wins over Presbyterian and a three-game sweep of Stetson, the Spartans stayed put in this week's ranking, coming in at No. 37. It is the highest RPI ranking in the history of the program. The NCAA uses the RPI for at-large selections for NCAA Championships.
Upstate is the highest ranked team in the A-Sun in this week's RPI ranking. Jacksonville is the second-highest A-Sun team in the RPI at No. 44 and is followed by Kennesaw State (No. 52), North Florida (No. 53), Lipscomb (No. 56), Kennesaw State (No. 73), Stetson (No. 132), Mercer (No. 145), ETSU (No. 196) and Northern Kentucky (No. 240). The Spartans are also the top-ranked team in South Carolina, ahead of South Carolina (No. 48), Coastal Carolina (No. 98) and Furman (No. 100) in the Top 100.
Armed with a 32-3 overall record, Upstate is well represented in the latest NCAA statistical rankings. The Spartans were fourth last week in batting average, but after raising their average by .004 points last week, took over the top spot in the nation. In addition, Upstate's .914 winning percentage is second in the nation, trailing only No. 1 Oklahoma at .944 (34-2).
Upstate ranks in the Top 10 in five different statistical categories. In addition to the batting average and winning percentage rankings, the Spartans are fourth with a .980 fielding percentage and seventh with 1.77 doubles per game and a .552 slugging percentage. Upstate is 11th with seven runs a game and 18th with a 1.84 ERA.
Individually, Shellie Robinson (DeLand, Fla.) ranks 13th with 0.37 doubles per game and 15th with 1.11 runs per outing. Maddison Kieffer (Middleburg, Fla.) is 19th with a .447 batting average and 21st with three sacrifice flies. Jamie Ujvari (Niceville, Fla.) is 14th with 4.12 hits allowed per game and 23rd with a 1.45 ERA to highlight the Spartan pitching unit.
Upstate plays host to ETSU in an A-Sun doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 and will travel to Nashville, Tenn., this weekend for a three-game A-Sun series against Lipscomb.
