Spartanburg, S.C. – After turning in a tremendous performance against #20 Kentucky and Georgetown on Sunday in the final day of the Coke Zero Spartan Classic, USC Upstate standout softball player Shellie Robinson has been named the A-Sun Player of the Week.
Robinson, a sophomore from DeLand, Fla., had a tremendous week last week. She hit .500 for the week with three of her nine hits coming as home runs and three as doubles. She also hit a triple as well, finishing the week with a 1.278 slugging percentage.
"Shellie was simply amazing Sunday and put what can't be described as anything other than amazing," said Upstate head coach Chris Hawkins. "I am proud of her effort in leading what was a very strong team effort over the weekend and for getting the respect around the conference in being selected the player of the week."
Robinson began the week with two runs and an RBI in the sweep of Gardner-Webb and scored twice against Howard in Upstate's first game of the Coke Zero Spartan Classic hosted by the Spartans at Cyrill Stadium.
But, it was her performance Sunday that was simply amazing and made her mark for the week. She was simply tremendous against Georgetown, finishing the game with a home run, two doubles and a triple to go along with four runs and three RBIs.
In the highlight game of the week against #20 Kentucky, she finished the three hits, including two solo home runs and a double, to go along with three runs and three RBIs against the Wildcats' top-two pitchers who have combined to claim three wins over Top 20 competition so far this season. Her performance helped the Spartans take the Wildcats to a marathon 11 innings before falling, 12-8. She finished the weekend tournament with an amazing 2.000 slugging percentage with eight hits, nine runs and six RBIs.
Robinson's selection as player of the week by the A-Sun is the second time in the first three weeks that a Spartan has taken home the honors this season. Maddison Kieffer (Middleburg, Fla.) earned the honor after the first week of the season. It is Robinson's fourth weekly honor from the A-Sun after earning the player of the week award three times as a freshman last season.
