Spartanburg, S.C. – After tossing a no-hitter in leading the USC Upstate softball team to an 8-0 victory over George Mason in the Firehouse Subs Spartan Invitational, junior hurler Anna Miller has been named the A-Sun Pitcher of the Week by College Sports Madness.
Miller, a junior from Portland, Ore., tossed a complete game, five-inning no-hitter that was shortened because of the run rule. She struck out seven and walked four in the outing against George Mason. It was her first career Division I no-hitter.
Miller became the eighth player in the history of the program to throw a no-hitter, the third different player to do so in Upstate's Division I era. She is the first to throw a no-hitter since Lacey Dinney tossed a no-hitter in the 5-0 victory over UNC Wilmington last year on Feb. 18. In all, Upstate pitchers have thrown 17 no-hitters, one of which was a perfect game by Kristy Middagh (5 inning, 2002 vs. North Greenville). All-time great Morgan Childers leads the all-time list with six career no-hitters.
Miller is in her first season at Upstate after turning in a stellar junior college career at the College of Siskiyous in California. She was a Cal JUCO All-American last year and was named the Pitcher of the Year in leading Siskiyous into the championship game in California. She finished her JUCO career with a 1.32 ERA, 44 wins and 343 strikeouts in two seasons. Miller is currently 2-0 with a 0.70 ERA and 13 strikeouts for Upstate this season.
Upstate plays host to Gardner-Webb Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader before hosting the Coke Zero Spartan Classic Friday-Sunday at Cyrill Stadium. The Spartans will welcome Georgetown, Howard, Presbyterian and nationally-ranked Kentucky to town for the tournament.
