Spartanburg, S.C. - Coming off a strong opening weekend last week that saw the USC Upstate softball team win all four games and the championship in the Subway Upstate Classic, the Spartans will be back in action playing host to five teams in the Firehouse Subs Spartan Invitational this weekend at Cyrill Stadium.
Upstate will welcome to town Bowling Green, George Mason, George Washington, Samford and Winthrop for the three-day tournament which starts Friday. Upstate will open play in the tournament Friday afternoon at 2:00 against George Mason. The Spartans will then take on Winthrop and George Washington in back-to-back games Saturday afternoon starting at 2:00 and 4:00, before wrapping up the tournament Sunday afternoon at 1:00 against Samford. Upstate will not play Bowling Green in the tournament this weekend, but will play the other four schools in the field.
Upstate enters the weekend with a 4-0 record after winning the Subway Upstate Classic last weekend at Cyrill Stadium. The Spartans claimed wins over Maine (5-1), UMKC (7-1), N.C. Central (14-0) and Western Carolina (9-0) in the tournament. Maddison Kieffer led the Spartans, hitting .800 with four doubles and six runs to earn Most Valuable Player honors.
Bowling Green will open its season this weekend. All of the other teams in the tournament have already played this season. George Mason stands 1-3, while George Washington in 1-2. Samford is 2-3 on the year, while Winthrop is 1-3. Upstate is 6-1 all-time against George Mason, 3-0 since making the move to Division I in 2008. The Spartans are 4-1 all-time against Winthrop with all games being played during Upstate's Division I era. The Spartans have never played George Washington or Samford.
