Spartanburg, S.C. – Day one of the Subway Upstate Classic softball tournament hosted by USC Upstate at Cyrill Stadium saw Maine claim a 9-1 victory in six innings over N.C. Central and UMKC taking a 6-2 victory over Western Carolina Friday afternoon.
In the tournament opener, Brooke Parker had two RBIs and Chelsea Hartwig picked up two hits as UMKC (1-0) took the 6-2 win. Deanna Friese went the distance for the Kangaroos, allowing two runs on six hits with 11 strikeouts. Jordan Garrett took the loss for Western Carolina (0-1).
In the nightcap, Maine (1-0) scored three runs in the bottom of the first and four in the bottom of the third to open a commanding 7-1 lead and went on for the 9-1 win. Jean Stevens led the way with two hits and four RBIs, while Kristen Koslosky led the Black Bears with three hits. Beth Spoehr tossed five innings to earn the win. She allowed one unearned run on four hits with five strikeouts. Bianka Molina took the loss for N.C. Central (0-1).
The Subway Upstate Classic continues with five games Saturday at Cyrill Stadium. The first game begins at 10:00 a.m. with N.C. Central taking on UMKC. Upstate will open its season at 2:00 p.m. against Maine before taking on UMKC at 4:00.
