SPARTANBURG, S.C. – With just one game on tap this week, the USC Upstate women's soccer team welcomes the Buccaneers of ETSU to town for a Saturday evening A-Sun matchup at County University Stadium.
The Spartans are winless in five attempts all-time against the Bucs, including a 4-0 loss in Johnson City, Tenn., last season. Both teams stumbled on the road last weekend at Mercer as the Spartans dropped a 3-0 decision to the Bears, while the Bucs fell 3-1 in Macon, Ga.
Scoring Machine: Ramey Kearns has turned into one of the most prolific scorers in the nation with 13 goals on the season, ranking her third in the country. She sits just one score behind Georgetown's Daphne Corboz and Central Arkansas' Adriana Lucar for the top spot in the land. Kearns' 13 goals are an ETSU single-season record with five games still remaining in the regular season. She is also tied for the 29th-best total in A-Sun history and fifth-most in the A-Sun since the 2005 season.
Plantz Plugging Along: With 13 more saves last week in two games, Sarah Plantz jumped up to sixth in the country in total saves with 84 and continues to lead the A-Sun in stops during the 2012 season. At 6.46 saves per contest, Plantz is on pace to crack the top 25 in the A-Sun record books for saves in a season.
All about the Defense: While the Upstate defense has played well in spurts, they will need to put up a brick wall for a full 90 minutes to keep the powerful ETSU offense out of the net. The Bucs have scored in every game this season and are averaging 2.05 goals per contest. On the flip side, ETSU's defense has been vulnerable at times, giving up goals in 12 of its 14 games and allowing 1.88 goals per match.
Consistent Starters: Through seven weeks of A-Sun play, 46 A-Sun women's soccer student-athletes have started in every contest for their team. Upstate has had two players stay consistent in the lineup through all 13 games with Michelle Calmeyn getting the nod up top, while Alexa Hone has started every game in the back. Plantz and Katrina Savoy have started in all but one contest so far, while Rachel Carr has been inserted into the starting lineup in 11 of the 13 games this fall.
