Women's Soccer Set to Begin 2010 Regular Season

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The USC Upstate women's soccer team will officially kickoff the 2010 season when they host the Buccaneers of Charleston Southern University on Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. Following the match with CSU, Upstate will travel south to Greenville for a match on Tuesday evening (8/24) at Furman. Scouting the Buccaneers
Charleston Southern was predicted to finish second in the Big
South Conference in 2010. The Bucs, who received four
first-place votes and tallied 87 points in the poll that saw the
Liberty Flames earn the preseason top spot with five first-place
votes and 94 points.
The Buccanners return a trio of strong players for the 2010
season, including reigning Big South Conference Player of the Year,
Marky Boyce. Boyce is joined by fellow returnees Caitlin
Wesnesky and Morgann Wood. Wesnesky earned First-Team All-Big
South honors, while Wood was named to the All-Freshman Team.
Scouting the Paladins
Furman enters the 2010 season predicted to finish sixth in the
Southern Conference. Junior forward Martha Hall was selected
to the preseason All-SoCon First-Team. Hall led the Paladins
in goals scored (9) and points (19) in 2009.
Last season, Brittany Daughtry tied a school-record with 14 saves
in Greenville. Daughtry's record breaking performance marked
the fourth time in program history that a Spartan tallied 14 saves
in a single match. Daughtry went on to finish her four-year
career with 236 saves, putting her third all-time in school
history.
Looking Back at the Preseason
Upstate competed in a pair of exhibitions to prepare for the
upcoming season. The Spartans hosted USC Sumter on Fri., Aug.
13, a match the Spartans won 7-0. Seven different Spartans

White picked up assists in the victory.
Following the match with the Fireants, the Spartans made the short
trek down Pine Street to face off with Converse College. The
Spartans claimed a 3-0 victory over the Valkyries to close out the
preseason. Just like the first exhibition, Erika Kotterer put
the Spartans on the board first as she scored on a pass from Julia
Harris. Gabrielle Fennell picked up her second goal of the
preseason when she scored off of Ashlee Barrow's pass after
freshman Jessica
Jackyra stole the ball away from the Converse midfield.
Barrow tacked on the final goal, setting the final score at
3-0.
Ashlee Barrow Named as Player to Watch by

Each season TopDrawerSoccer.com lists its top 20 players to watch
in each conference. This season, Ashlee Barrow was ranked
16th in the list of 20 players from the Atlantic Sun
Conference. The Fishkill, N.Y., native was named to the A-Sun
All-Freshman Team in 2009 and has an outstanding preseason to begin
her sophomore season. With her selection to the All-Freshman
Team, she became the first Spartan since 2006 and the first since
the move to D-I to earn all-conference honors. Aside from the
All-Freshman Team accolades in 2009, Barrow earned All-Academic
Team honors from the A-Sun as well as Upstate's Coach's Award and
the Wilde Soccer Scholarship.
Sweet Sixteen
A total of 16 new players will suit up for the Spartans in
2010. Gabrielle Fennell (a transfer from Garner-Webb) and Karen
Martinez joined the Spartans during the spring. Of the
remaining 14, 12 of the newcomers are freshmen (Kimberley

Ledwell, Alyssa
Librizzi, Courtney
Mack, Kayli Moore, Sarah

Voigt and Danielle White). Julia Harris joins the
Spartans after a two-year stint at Spartanburg Methodist College,
while Krystal
Hedderman comes on board after two years at St. Andrew's
Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, N.C.
The Spartanburg Circuit
Mary Rea was named as an assistant women's soccer coach on July
16, 2010 and joined the third and final Spartanburg four-year
institution. Prior to joining the Spartan coaching staff, Rea
served as an assistant coach at Converse College during the 2009
season. Converse is a NCAA Division II institution and is a
member of Conference Carolinas.
She was a four year letterwinner at Wofford College from 2004-08,
where she earned defensive MVP honors as a freshman and team MVP
accolades as a junior. Rea, who earned all-academic honors for her
hard work in the classroom, was a team captain as a senior.
