FORT MYERS, Fla. - Playing in its final match of the 2009 season, the USC Upstate women's soccer team was downed on the road by Florida Gulf Coast by a score of 10-0. FGCU, like Upstate (0-19-0, 0-10-0 A-Sun), is not eligible for postseason play during the transition to Division I, so the Eagles (11-5-3, 6-2-2 A-Sun) season ended today as well.
FGCU put the match away early as they posted two goals in the first 16:37 of the match. FGCU, already leading 2-0, tallied three more goals in the first half en route to a 5-0 intermission lead.
In the final frame of 2009 for both the Spartans and the Eagles, FGCU again tallied five goals in a period. Those five goals set the final margin at 10-0 and the 10 goals allowed were the most in 2009 by the Spartans.
In the match, FGCU out shot Upstate by a 27-0 margin and the Eagles recorded 15 shots on goal. FGCU also tallied six corner kicks, while Upstate did not attempt a corner kick.
Upstate senior goal keeper Brittany Daughtry, playing her final collegiate match, recorded four saves on Sunday afternoon. The Smithfield, N.C. native finishes 2009 with 74 saves and a career total of 236. With 236 career saves, Daughtry finishes her career ranked third all-time for saves in a career.
