Upstate Drops Contest to Charleston Southern

Boone, N.C. - USC Upstate grabbed an early lead, but could not hold onto it as Charleston Southern scored four unanswered goals, including three goals in the second half for a 4-1 win over the Spartans in a game played in soggy, rainy conditions at ASU Soccer Stadium on the campus of Appalachian State University on Friday afternoon.
Upstate falls to 2-2-0 on the season and Charleston Southern improves to 2-1-0.
The Spartans broke out first in the 28th minute when junior midfielder Nicole Trawick put the ball in the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season on a pass from freshman midfielder Alyssa Roegner. Charleston Southern responded in the 38th minute when a shot from the top of the box by midfielder Marky Boyce connected to tie the game at 1-1.
In the second half, the Buccaneers took the lead in the 55th minute as forward Michelle Dennis took a cross from forward Emma Mattison and put the ball in on a header to take a 2-1 lead. Charleston Southern put the game away with two goals in the last 10 minutes. Midfielder Sarah Catenacci scored on a shot from 10 yards out in the 80th minute and Dennis scored her second goal of the game on a header from three yards out in the 90th minute.
Upstate was outshot 37-7 by the Buccaneers and Charleston Southern also had eight corner kicks to the Spartans' two.
Trawick scored her fourth goal in as many games this season and her 12th career goal, tying her for seventh all-time on the Upstate career goals list with Jaime Newman (2001-04) and Christine Pirinoli (2001-02). The assist by Roegner was her first career assist and point.
Dennis finished with two goals and an assist to lead the Buccaneers and Boyce had a goal and an assist.
Spartans junior goalkeeper Samantha Spradley had 14 saves and falls to 1-2-0 in goal this season. Charleston Southern goalkeeper Jena Uvalle had two saves.
Upstate will face another in-state foe next Friday, Sept. 21, when it travels to The Citadel for a 5:00 p.m. game.
