Spartans Finish 13th at Low Country Intercollegiate
Hilton Head Island, S.C. – Despite a game effort, the USC Upstate women's golf team turned in a 332 final round total and fell three spots to finish 13th in the Low Country Intercollegiate Monday afternoon at Moss Creek Golf Club.
Upstate entered the day in 10th place and had some space to move on the leaderboard. While three Spartans improved their scores over Sunday's first round, the team posted a higher score on Monday and three teams jumped the Spartans on the leaderboard. Upstate finished the tournament with a 659 total, seven shots back of 12th place Western Kentucky.
"We got off to a slow start today and never were able to get it going," said Upstate assistant coach Audrey Church. "We saved ourselves from some bad holes, but on the other hand, spent too many strokes around the greens. The girls played good golf, they just weren't able to light that fire and get some strong streaks going."
Amanda Hall (Tega Cay, S.C.) improved her score by three strokes over the first round and posted an 80 on Monday to finish as the low Spartan in the tournament. She finished with a 163 total and in a tie for 37th. Marissa Clontz (Greenville, S.C.) was the second-lowest Spartan in the first round and remained in that position, finishing with a 164 total and in a tie for 39th in her first tournament of the year playing when he score counted toward the team total.
"Marissa played steady golf this weekend," said Church. "I'm impressed that she was able to jump in the lineup and make such a solid contribution."
Taylor Pleier (Spartanburg) finished the tournament with an 82 on Monday for a 165 total. She finished tied for 47th. Brittany Lowe (Spartanburg) carded an 87 on Monday and a 167 total, good for a tie for 52nd. Madison Bryant (Chapin, S.C.) finished 71st with a 186 total. She improved her second round score, a 90, by six strokes over the first day.
Appalachian State won the tournament with a 621 total and was followed by Radford (623), Jacksonville (624), Elon (627), Gardner-Webb (639), Wofford (641), Presbyterian College (642), Newberry (643), Bowling Green State (646), Brown (646), Princeton (647), Western Kentucky (652), Upstate (659), Tennessee Tech (669) and The Citadel (675) in the 15-team tournament.
