Spartan Women Play for A-Sun Tourney Ticket in Music City

Game Notes

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The USC Upstate women's basketball team (7-19, 6-9 A-Sun) wraps up its tour of Nashville, Tenn., tomorrow with a 4 p.m. (CT) contest at Lipscomb (5-21, 3-12 A-Sun) as an Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament berth hangs in the balance for the Spartans.

Bison Bits:

Lipscomb enters Saturday's contest with a 5-21 record this season, including a 3-12 mark in A-Sun play. The Bison are 4-8 at home this season.

In the Bison's last outing, they dropped a 59-39 decision at home to ETSU Thursday, Feb. 16. Lipscomb was led by Anna Bowers with 10 points and five rebounds. Leah McAlister snagged a team-high seven boards for the squad, while Morgan Faulkner and Hannah Phillips handed out three assists each.

On the season, LU is led by Bowers, averaging 12.9 points per game. Phillips is second on the squad with 11.5 points an outing, while Faulkner tallies 8.3 points a contest. Phillips leads the Bison in rebounds, averaging 5.2 boards per game, while Sasha Robinson pulls down 4.8 rebounds a game. 

Earlier this season, Upstate defeated Lipscomb 73-66 inside the Hodge Center Jan.19. The Spartans were led by a trio of double-digit scorers as junior Tee'Ara Copney (Asheville, N.C.) led the way with 24 points. Freshman Shelby Hicks (Greeneville, Tenn.) was second on the squad with 13 points, while junior Lauren McRoberts (Carmel, Ind.) tallied 12 points. McRoberts grabbed a game-high nine rebounds, while Copney dished out a game-best six assists and swiped a career-high eight steals.

In the teams' last meeting, the Bison were led by Bowers with 19 points, while Phillips recorded 14 points. Bowers and Robinson pulled down a team-high six rebounds apiece. Phillips also led LU, posting five steals and three assists.

Upstate owns a 7-2 overall advantage against Lipscomb, including a 2-2 mark in Nashville, Tenn. The Spartans have won the last five meetings against the Bison. Upstate hasn't lost to Lipscomb since dropping a 94-77 decision in Music City Feb. 15, 2009.

Spartan Snip-Its:

The Spartans have been strong from the free throw line all season, shooting 77.6 percent. Upstate ranks ninth in the nation in free throw percentage and leads the conference. Copney leads the squad at the line, shooting 87.8 percent (79-for-90). She is second in the A-Sun in the category and is 17th in the NCAA statistical rankings.

On the season, Upstate is led by Copney with 15.5 points per game and 4.5 rebounds per contest. Freshman Briana Robinson (Columbia, S.C.) and Tyra Smith (Lawrenceville, Ga.) average 7.6 and 7.3 points per contest, respectively. Freshman Paulina Zaveckaite (Telsiai, Lithuania) leads the squad with 7.0 boards per contest, while McRoberts is second on the team in rebounds, averaging 5.7 per game.
