SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Following a 4-3 season-opening victory over Presbyterian last Sunday, the USC Upstate men's tennis team will make the nearly 3,000 mile trek to Eugene, Ore., to play three matches in as many days this weekend.
The Spartans will take on the Oregon Ducks Friday at 1 p.m. EST, Eastern Washington Saturday at 4 p.m. EST and cap the weekend stint Sunday with the Portland Pilots at 1 p.m. EST.
- In Division I play, the Spartans are 2-1 all-time against the West Coast Conference (Portland), while holding a 1-0 record against the Great West Conference (EWU). Upstate will play its first-ever match against the Pac-12 Conference when they take on Oregon Friday afternoon.
- Upstate picked up a win in its season-opener for the second straight year last Sunday when Viktor Selander battled past Andrew Brigham for a three-set victory. Following the match, Upstate Head Coach Dr. Oliver Trittenwein described Selander as a "fighter to the end."
- Jamie Yates was the only player to pick up wins in singles and doubles action in Upstate's season-opener when he paired up with Jacob Darling for the clinching 8-6 doubles victory, while his comeback three-set win in singles action turned the tide late and handed the Spartans all the momentum.
- Matthias Kidler was dominate in singles play last Sunday at the No. 1 position, knocking off Grayson Mille 6-4, 6-0 and quickly handing the Spartans their first singles point of the afternoon. Kidler and Viktor Selander were also on the verge of a doubles comeback earlier in the day and knotted the score 7-7 when Upstate captured the doubles point.
Next Time Out: After taking a trip to the west coast, Upstate returns home and opens the month of February by welcoming Gardner-Webb to town for a Feb. 2 matchup at 1 p.m.
