SPARTANBURG, S.C. – USC Upstate senior Ramiro Blanco was one of four Atlantic Sun players to be a unanimous First-Team All-Conference selection, the league office in Macon, Ga., announced today.
Blanco, playing in his final season, opened the season on a nine-match winning streak. After dropping his first two conference matches, Blanco lost just once down the stretch to finish the regular season at 15-3.
"It is always a great feeling to have an athlete recognized by other coaches for league honors," said head coach Dr. Oliver Trittenwein. "Ramiro had an outstanding season playing at the top of the lineup in both singles and doubles. The accolade Ramiro received is a great honor for him, the team and the university."
Blanco teamed with Matthias Kidler for 17 of his 18 doubles appearances and the duo posted a 13-4 record at position No. 1. In Blanco's only contest without Kidler, he teamed with Tyler Grove and the duo picked up a win in the third match of the season (vs. Anderson University, Feb. 8).
In the regular-season finale, Blanco defeated All-A-Sun First Team selection Sander Gille (#73, ETSU, Apr. 14) by a score of 4-6, 7-6 (7-1), 1-0 (10-4). In singles play, Blanco currently ranks second in program history with a career win percentage of .800 (68-17) and his 68 career wins are good enough for third all-time.
The men's tennis team will make their first-ever appearance in the A-Sun Tournament when they battle Lipscomb tomorrow morning in Johnson City, Tenn. The match-up between the fifth-seeded Spartans and the fourth-seeded Bison is slated to begin at 8:30 a.m., with the winner advancing to the semifinals to face the top-seeded Bucs of ETSU.
