SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's and women's tennis teams travel to Florida for a pair of Atlantic Sun Conference matches, taking on North Florida March 16 and Jacksonville March 17.
The Spartan men moved to 7-4 on the season, picking up a pair of home wins last weekend. Upstate blanked Maryland-Baltimore County 7-0 March 10 and followed that with a 4-0 win against Longwood March 12. The Spartans are on a three-match winning-streak, led by senior Ramiro Blanco (Chascomus, Argentina), who remains undefeated on the season in singles play at 9-0, including a 6-0 mark in No. 1 spot.
The Upstate women slipped to 3-9 on the season with two losses at home last weekend. The Spartans fell to UMBC 6-1 March 10 and to Longwood 4-2 March 12. Against the Retrievers, Upstate's lone point came at third singles as sophomore Talia Rojas (Lima, Peru) hung on for a 6-4, 4-6 and 10-8 win. The Spartans earned the doubles point against the Lancers as Rojas and freshman Isabel von Stryk (Holm, Germany) won 8-5 in the No. 1 position and junior Julie Bell (Lubbock, Texas) and freshman Hannah Al-Sakati (Duisburg, Germany) tallied an 8-6 victory in the No. 2 slot. Rojas picked up a 6-0, 7-6 win at No. 4 singles.
At North Florida Friday, the men's match is at 10 a.m. and women's match is at 2 p.m. The UNF men are 9-4 overall this season, winning four-straight matches and beating three ranked opponents this season. On the women's side, the Ospreys post a 4-4 record this season.
The women's match at Jacksonville Saturday is scheduled for 10 a.m. with the men's match following at 2 p.m. The Dolphin women also only have three wins on the season, entering the weekend of A-Sun play with a 3-6 overall record. On the men's side, JU is 2-7, losing its last five matches.
