Men’s Tennis Blanks UMBC, 7-0

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – With conference play set to begin in less than a week, the USC Upstate men's tennis team had a strong showing Saturday as they defeated Maryland-Baltimore County, 7-0, at the Upstate Tennis Complex.

Upstate (6-4) swept through the doubles matches as Matthias Kidler/Ramiro Blanco (doubles No. 1), Yvon Haessig/Pierre Verning (doubles No. 2) and Gonzalo Blanco/Jacob Darling (doubles No. 3) all claimed victories.

Kidler, Gonzalo Blanco and Vernin were victorious in straight sets.  Kidler defeated Joe Adewumi, 6-0, 6-1 at singles No. 2, while Blanco posted a 6-3, 6-1 win over Gaulthier Berret at singles No. 3.  Vernin downed Kamal Patel, 6-3, 6-4, at singles no. 6.

Meanwhile, Ramiro Blanco, Yvon Haessig and Tyler Grove all dropped their respective first sets before rallying for victories.

Blanco defeated Cristian Hodel, 2-6, 6-2, 10-8, at singles No. 1 to earn his ninth-straight singles victory.  At singles No. 4, Haessig downed Juan Manual Aranzazu, 4-6, 6-2, 10-4, while Grove (singles No. 5) defeated Daniel Gray, 5-7, 6-0, 11-9.

The Spartans will return to action Monday afternoon when they host Longwood at 2 p.m.
