Jan. 31, 2009
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - A strong performance by the second half of the USC Upstate men's tennis team's lineup led the team to a morning win over Troy in a tight 4-3 win before the team wrapped up the afternoon with a 7-0 win over Alabama State in non-conference action on Saturday.
The doubleheader was an unusual one for the Spartans, who started the day by playing at Troy University in Troy Ala., before hitting the road for Alabama State in Montgomery, Ala., immediately following the Troy match.
The Spartans (2-1 overall) earned the doubles point by winning the first two finished matches, at the No. 2 and No. 3 slots against the Trojans (0-4 overall). Juniors Javier Tori and Renzo Airaldi finished first with an 8-4 win over Benjamin Chomette and Xavier Masson and freshman Edgar Rodriguez and junior Jack Roux added an 8-6 win over Bastian Maucher and Aurelien Tave to clinch the point before the Spartans top pair fell to conclude doubles play.
In singles play, the Spartans took a 2-0 lead as Roux notched a 6-2, 6-3 win over Maucher at No. 4 singles. The Trojans closed the gap with a win at No. 2 singles, but the Spartans clinched the match with wins from junior Arnaldo Lovera (6-4, 6-3 over Guilherme Sahadi) at No. 5 singles and senior Leandro Osorio (7-5, 7-5 over Maxime Zamora) at No. 6 singles. The Trojans wrapped up the match with three-set singles wins, as Airaldi fell at No. 1 and Tori fell at the No. 3 slot.
After the 49-mile commute to Montgomery, the Spartans stayed hot, posting a 7-0 win over Alabama State, with Osorio and freshman Ramiro Blanco notching an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles and Rodriguez and Roux notching an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles to clinch the doubles point.
In singles play, Rodriguez picked up his first career singles win at No. 1 with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Denys Alyeksyeyeu. Airaldi added a 6-0, 6-0 win over Ian Burt at No. 2 singles, freshman Ramiro Blanco notched a 6-0, 6-0 win over Roddrick Ivory at No. 3, sophomore Nico Ospina notched a 6-0, 6-1 win over Clifford Frazier at No. 4 and sophomore Ignacio Velez wrapped up the win with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Quintero Moore at No. 5.
