Spartans Drop Heartbreaker to Hatters
DeLAND, Fla. – Ryan Asare-Bediako's goal in the second overtime period lifted Stetson over the USC Upstate men's soccer team on Sunday afternoon at the Stetson Soccer Complex.
Stetson (7-2-1, 4-0-0) got on the board first as Fredrik Brustad scored in the 34th-minute to give the Hatters a 1-0 lead. Stetson held the 1-0 advantage at intermission.
The Spartans (1-7-3, 0-4-0) delivered the equalizer in the 89th-minute when Michael Rankin-Byrne (Kingston, Ontario/Plymouth Regional) scored from 30 yards out and helped extend the match.
The two teams combined for three shots in the first overtime. In the second overtime, Rankin-Byrne had a chance to win the match for the Spartans, but his shot in the 102nd-minute was saved by Stetson goalkeeper Andreas Schnabl.
In the 105th-minute, Asare-Bediako's delivered the game-winner as Stetson claimed the 2-1 victory.
Stetson took 16 shots in the match, seven were on-target, while Upstate took 12 shots and four were directed at the net. The Hatters led the way in corner kicks (13-5).
Upstate goalkeeper Jason McCabe (Irmo, S.C./Dutch Fork) tallied three saves in the match, while Stetson's Schnabl recorded three. Upstate also tallied two team saves in the match.
The Spartans will return to the friendly confines of County University Soccer Stadium on Friday night as they host North Florida at 7:00 p.m.
