JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The USC Upstate men's basketball team saw North Florida shoot over 50-percent from long range and pick up a 77-53 victory Saturday evening at UNF Arena in Atlantic Sun Conference action.
The Spartans (14-16, 8-9 A-Sun) connected on just 39-percent of their attempts from the field and fall to 0-4 on the year in the state of Florida, while the Ospreys (12-17, 7-9) pick up a win on Senior Night and sit one half game back of fifth place in the league standings.
Upstate was all over the floor in the early going, pulling down eight offensive rebounds in the first nine minutes of action and leading by as many as three points with 11:38 remaining when Ty Greene drilled a three-pointer to make it 16-13.
After trading buckets over the next three minutes, the Ospreys scored nine unanswered points, capped by one of three first-half three-pointers from Parker Smith to give UNF a 28-20 lead with 3:56 left in the half. The Ospreys led by as many as 14 points in the opening period, but a Jodd Maxey jumper cut the Upstate deficit to 36-24 heading to intermission.
North Florida came racing out of the gates in the second half, using a 16-5 spurt in less than four minutes to create a 23-point lead at 52-29 with 16:38 left.
The Spartans would cut the lead down below 20 points on two different occasions, but UNF was not to be denied on Senior Night as they led by as many as 25 points and cruised to a 77-53 victory.
The Ospreys sank Upstate with 11 three-pointers in just 21 attempts, while the Spartans committed 21 turnovers which led to 24 points the other way.
After crashing the boards and pulling down eight offensive rebounds in the first nine minutes, Upstate managed to grab just six the rest of the contest as UNF fought back to knot the rebound battle 34-34 when the final buzzer sounded.
Ricardo Glenn paced the Spartans with 16 points on 8-for-11 shooting from the field, while Torrey Craig chipped in 13 points and a pair of blocks. Adrian Rodgers added eight points and a game-high five assists and Babatunde Olumuyiwa pulled down nine boards in 22 minutes of action.
The Spartans will have a six-day break before traveling to ETSU Friday, March 1 to battle the Buccaneers in the final contest of the regular season. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. and will be televised regionally on CSS and nationally on ESPN3.
