SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On the heels of a 25-point victory by the USC Upstate men's basketball team to cap a three-game stint on the west coast, Torrey Craig was named to the 2012 Edward Jones CBE Classic Hall of Fame Classic All-Tournament team.
The junior from Rock Hill, S.C., averaged 16.7 points per game for the Thanksgiving week classic to lead the Spartans at the CBE Hall of Fame Classic hosted at the Leavey Center by Santa Clara University.
Craig opened the week with a 17-point performance against Santa Clara, going 7-16 from the field and knocking down a pair of three-pointers. He came back against Eastern Washington the following day and tallied 14 points, including a game-tying trey with 2:38 remaining as the Spartans mounted a second-half comeback against the Eagles.
With Upstate looking to head back east with a win, Craig led the Spartans in a rout of Utah Valley, scoring 19 points and adding 11 rebounds for the team's first double-double of the year. The Spartans scored on their first 10 possessions of the game, including a pair of buckets from Craig who ended the contest 7-for-11 from the field to lead Upstate to a 75-50 victory over the Wolverines.
For the week, Craig shot 54 percent from the field, pulled down 21 rebounds and scored 50 points, giving up 103 points for the season. His 17.2 points per game for the year rank fourth in the Atlantic Sun Conference, while his 103 total points are tied for second in the league with FGCU's Bernard Thompson.
As the defending A-Sun Player of the Year, Craig has now scored double figures in six straight games to start the 2012-13 season and has reached double-digits in 24 of his last 27 games dating back to last season.
Joining Craig on the team was Santa Clara's Kevin Foster and Evan Roquemore, Eastern Washington's Venky Jois and Utah Valley's Ben Aird. Santa Clara's Marc Trasolini was named the tournament MVP after averaging 25 points per game and leading the Broncos to three straight wins.
Craig and the Spartans will continue the program's season-long six-game road swing on Thursday evening, traveling to nearby UNC Asheville to battle the Bulldogs.
The 13th all-time meeting between the two schools is slated to tip-off at 7 p.m. from Kimmel Arena in Asheville, N.C.
