Greene Named A-Sun Newcomer of the Week
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – After helping the USC Upstate men's basketball team post a 1-1 record in the Music City, rookie guard Ty Greene (Knoxville, Tenn.) has been named the Atlantic Sun's Newcomer of the Week, the conference office in Macon, Ga., announced today.
At Lipscomb, Greene sank a step-back three-pointer as time expired to give the Spartans a 62-61 come-from-behind win Saturday night. Greene's triple was the number two play of the day on ESPN's SportsCenter.
The Spartan rookie finished 5-for-10 from the floor, 4-of-8 from beyond the arc and 3-of-6 at the line en route to 17 points. He also tallied three steals and one rebound in 31 minutes of action.
The Spartan victory over Lipscomb and the loss by ETSU at Belmont Saturday secured a top-three finish for Upstate in the 2011-12 A-Sun regular season standings.
At Belmont, Greene again reached double-figures as he posted a team-high 18 points. Greene helped lead the potential comeback as the Spartans climbed within three points Monday night. Greene hit four triples against the Bruins and hit 6-of-7 free throws. He also recorded five assists, three rebounds and two steals.
For the week, Greene averaged 17.5 points, 2.5 assists, 2.5 steals and 2.0 rebounds. He finished 9-for-21 from the floor (.429), 8-of-15 on three-pointers (.533) and 9-of-13 at the line (.692).
