Break out the Brooms: Spartans Sweep A-Sun Honors
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Off to its best start of the Division I era, the USC Upstate men's basketball team (8-5, 2-0) claimed both of the Atlantic Sun weekly honors (player of the week and newcomer of the week), the conference office in Macon, Ga., announced today.
Ricardo Glenn (Augusta, Ga.) was tabbed the A-Sun Player of the Week after averaging a double-double (12.3 ppg, 10.3 rpg) over the span of three games. Glenn recorded his first career double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds in the Spartans' 79-63 victory over Stetson Saturday in DeLand, Fla. Glenn, who grabbed eight offensive rebounds, was 4-for-8 from the floor and a perfect 4-of-4 at the free throw line.
Monday night, Glenn was at it again, recording his second double-double in as many games with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Glenn was 5-of-9 on field goal attempts and finished with five made free throws (six attempts) and seven offensive rebounds.
Against No. 2 Ohio State (12/14), Glenn tallied 10 points behind a 3-for-4 effort from the field and a 4-for-4 mark at the charity stripe. For the week, the redshirt-sophomore finished 12-for-21 (57.1%) on field goal attempts and 13-of-16 (81.3%) at the line.
Meanwhile, Ty Greene (Knoxville, Tenn.) earned the A-Sun's Newcomer of the Week award after two strong performances in league play. Monday night at FGCU, Greene scored 14 second-half points en route to a total of 21 as Upstate claimed an 80-75 win. His 21 points matched a career-high and he finished 5-for-12 from the floor (4-of-6 from beyond the arc) and 7-for-8 at the line.
Two days earlier, at Stetson, Greene posted a career-best 21 points as the Spartans downed the Hatters, 79-63. He was 7-for-13 from the floor including a 4-of-5 effort on three-point field goals and a perfect mark (3-for-3) at the free throw line.
For the week, Greene averaged 16.0 points and 2.0 assists per contest.
