Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate baseball team will begin the 2017 season this weekend at Harley Park as the Spartans welcome Virginia Tech for a three-game series. Friday's season-opener is schedule for 4 p.m. followed by 1 p.m. matchups on Saturday and Sunday.
Under the direction of 20th-year head coach Matt Fincher, Upstate returns 16 letterwinners for the 2017 season, including four starters and five pitchers.
Devon Ortiz earned ASUN Freshman of the Year honors in 2016 after he hit .352 with 25 runs scored and 37 hits in 105 at-bats. Ortiz is the first Spartan to win the ASUN Freshman of the Year and was also named to the Collegiate Baseball Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American team.
Bryan Hathaway led Upstate with a 1.67 ERA in 2016 and is the top returning pitcher with three wins. Blake Whitney tied for the team lead with 11 starts while Jordan Miller made a team-best 21 appearances.
Upstate finished last season with a 22-30 overall record and a 5-15 mark in ASUN play. The Spartans finished in seventh place in the league.
Virginia Tech is coming off of a 19-36 campaign that saw them finish with a 6-24 record in the ACC. The Hokies lead the all-time series 4-0 with this weekend's series the first meeting since 2011.
