DeCecco Pitches Way to A-Sun Honors
A-Sun Release | Friday's Recap | Friday's Boxscore
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – After a stellar performance on the bump against No. 20 Stetson on Friday night, USC Upstate starting pitcher Scott DeCecco (Cape May Courthhouse, N.J.) has been named the Atlantic Sun's Pitcher of the Week, announced today by the conference office in Macon, Ga.
DeCecco (3-2) helped Upstate pick up its first-ever win over a nationally-ranked Division I opponent as the Spartans shutout the Hatters, 6-0, at Harley Park.
DeCecco recorded his second straight outing of pitching at least seven innings as he tossed 117 pitches against the Hatters while scattering six hits and three walks. During his seven-inning outing, the southpaw struck out four Stetson batters.
The sophomore got off to a great start on Friday as he allowed just one hit over his first three innings of work and recorded back-to-back three up, three down innings in the second and third innings. He got out of back-to-back bases loaded jams in the fifth and sixth innings to preserve the shutout opportunity.
DeCecco earned the combined shutout after Chris Knauff (Marietta, Ga.) pitched the final two innings and closed the door on the Hatters as Upstate took game one of the series.
