Walls Currently First in Heptathlon after First Day of Charlotte Invitational

Charlotte, N.C. – USC Upstate junior Brittany Walls currently sits in first place of the heptathlon with 2,891 points following the first day of the Charlotte Invitational Friday under rainy skies at the Irwin Belk Track and Field Center.

The first day saw one school record fall for the Spartans, while one school mark was tied and seven personal-bests were achieved.

Walls is ahead of Evelyn Putnam of UNC Charlotte by 134 points in the heptathlon through four events as she earned two first-place finishes. She tied her own school record in the high jump with a mark of 1.65-meters and added a throw of 11.34-meters in the shot put to finish first in both events. Wall would also place second in the 200-meter dash after her time of 27.63.

Essence Jackson set a new school record in the 800-meter run as she posted a personal-best time of 2:16.59 to finish in ninth place. She surpassed the previous record of 2:16.86 recorded by Anastasia Kolesnitchenko at last year's Charlotte Invitational.

Jasmine Polite turned in the top performance for the Upstate women as she placed 2nd in the 5000-meter run with a personal-best time of 17:21.92. Ross Oden had the best finish for the men as he ran a 15:05.50 in the 5000-meter run to finish 3rd.

Matt Johnson also collected a top-5 finish as he was 5th in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:52.63.

Jackson and Polite were two of four Upstate women to compile personal-best times on Friday. Rebecca Elliott picked up a new personal-best in the 800-meter run and Danielle Horneff in the 5000-meter run.

On the men's side, three Spartans logged new personal-best times in Alex Love, Cameron Fowler and Spencer Nieto. All three athletes had personal-bests in the 5000-meter run.

The continuation of the men's decathlon begins competition Saturday morning at 9 a.m., with the final event of the day scheduled to start at 4:50 p.m. with the women's 4x400-meter relay.
