MACON, Ga. – Anastasia Kolesnitchenko and Kenny Sugishita of the USC Upstate women's and men's track & field teams were named Atlantic Sun Conference Female Track Athlete of the Week and Male Field Athlete of the Week, respectively as announced by the league office Wednesday afternoon.
This marks Sugishita's second conference weekly honor this outdoor season and fourth of his career. The senior took top honors in the men's hammer throw last weekend at the Charlotte Invitational, resetting his school record mark with a toss of 60.34-meters (197-11). His previous program-best mark was 58.41 (191-08), which he set April 13 at the Johnson C. Smith Invite. Sugishita's newest mark ranks him second in the A-Sun this season in the hammer.
He followed that performance with a second-place mark in the men's discus the next day at the Charlotte Invite. Sugishita recorded a hurl of 49.14-meters (161-03) in the discus.
Kolesnitchenko picked up her first career A-Sun weekly award, after turning in a school record performance in the women's 800-meter last week at the Charlotte Invite. The freshman clocked in at 2:16.86, beating the previous program-best of 2:17.48 set by Joan Tangwar in 2011.
Sugishita, Kolesnitchenko and the rest of the Upstate track & field teams return to action May 10-11, traveling to Jacksonville, Fla., for the A-Sun Outdoor Championships hosted by the University of North Florida. Follow the Spartans this season on your mobile device, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.
