CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The USC Upstate men's and women's track & field teams posted strong marks at the first day of the 2013 Beynon Sports Surface Catamount Classic hosted by Western Carolina Friday.
Sophomore Brittany Walls led the Spartan women, sitting first in the heptathlon with 2,826 points after four events. She set a school record during the high jump portion of the event, clearing 1.60-meters (5-03.00). The previous Upstate record in the high jump was 1.57-meters (5-01.75) set by Velegar Mark at the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships last year.
Walls recorded a throw of 10.89-meters (35-08.75) in the shot put during the heptathlon. She also clocked in at 15.88 in the 100-meter hurdles and crossed the line in 26.28 in the 200-meter. The heptathlon concludes Saturday with the long jump, javelin and 800-meter.
On the men's side, senior Kenny Sugishita took top honors in the discus with a toss of 50.31-meters (165-01). This mark eclipsed his season-opening hurl at last weekend's Charlotte 49er Classic by a foot.
Upstate freshman Kierstin Williams posted a mark of 28.00-meters (91-10) in the women's discus, while her classmate Erika West turned in a season-best throw of 27.57-meters (90-05) in the event. West also competed in the javelin, recording a hurl of 17.25-meters (56-07). Freshman Savannah Nichols registered a toss of 23.52-meters (77-02) in the discus.
The Catamount Classic will wrap up Saturday with field events beginning at 10 a.m. and running events starting at 11:30 a.m. Follow the Spartans this season on your mobile device, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.
