Upstate Grabs Four More Individual Titles at A-Sun Outdoor Track & Field Championship
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Atlantic Sun Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championship concluded with the USC Upstate men's team finishing fourth-place, while the women's squad took sixth, turning in a combined four individual championships today.
The Spartan men tallied the most points in program history with 106 points, while the women collected 38.5 points.
Junior Kenny Sugishita (Arroyo Grande, Calif.) earned his third A-Sun Outdoor title today, winning the men's discus with an A-Sun meet record and a school record toss of 52.53-meters (172-04). His classmate Gilbert Kemboi (Eloret, Kenya) claimed his second championship of the weekend, crossing the 5,000-meter finish line with a time of 14:59.49.
Junior Cameron Thomas (Niceville, Fla.) won a close 800-meter race for the Spartan men, posting a school record time of 1:53.13. In the men's high jump, senior Perrish Goggins (Columbia, S.C.) took first-place, clearing 2.01-meters (6-07.00). He came in eighth in the men's 100-meter dash finals with a time of 10.86.
In the men's 110-meter hurdles, junior Brandon Curry (Anderson, S.C.) earned third with a time of 15.00, while sophomore Joshua Powers (Spartanburg, S.C.) snagged seventh in the men's 400-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 56.12.
Junior Davey Dennison (Carlisle, Pa.) earned fourth in the men's 1,500-meter with program-best time of 3:55.02. He broke his previous record of 3:57.12, which he set at the Duke Invitational April 6. Sophomore Matt Johnson (Elgin, S.C.) took bronze in the men's 400-meter, setting an Upstate record with a time of 47.96. He beat the previous record of 47.99 set by Michael Meissner last year.
On the women's side, senior Jemeli Sang (Eldoret, Kenya) came in second-place in the 5,000-meter with a time of 17:29.44. Her classmate Joan Tangwar (Eldoret, Kenya) took third in the women's 1,500-meter with a time of 4:37.68.
In the women's high jump, junior Velegar Mark (Spartanburg, S.C.) posted a school record mark of 1.57-meters (5-01.75), claiming eighth. She beat the previous record of 1.56-meters (5-01.25) set by Laterrica Blocker at the A-Sun meet last year.
