Kemboi, Sang Smash Spartan Track Records at Duke Invitational
DURHAM, N.C. – Junior Gilbert Kemboi (Eldoret, Kenya) of the USC Upstate men's track & field team and senior Jemeli Sang (Eldoret, Kenya) of the women's team broke school records today against tough competition at the Duke Invitational.
In the men's 5,000-meter, Kemboi crossed the line 10th in the Section A race with a program-best time of 14:16.66, behind runners from ACC schools North Carolina and Duke. The previous Upstate record was set by junior Davey Dennison (Carlisle, Pa.) at the Charlotte 49er Classic earlier this year with a mark of 14:59.63.
Sang recorded a school record in the women's 5,000-meter, taking top honors in the Section A race with a time of 16:35.36. She beat the previous Spartan record of 17:14.10 set by senior Carolyne Chelulei (Eldoret, Kenya) in 2010.
Dennison matched his school record performance at last week's Raleigh Relays today in the men's 1,500-meter run. The junior registered a 12th-place finish with a time of 3:57.12. In the men's 5,000-meter Section C race, sophomore Andrew Kipchumba (Eldoret, Kenya) came in fourth with a time of 15:24.24.
The Spartan men continued to post strong times in the 10,000-meter. Sophomore Ross Oden (Salisbury, N.C.) recorded a ninth-place finish with a time of 31:44.69. Senior James Jackson (Aiken, S.C.) and freshman Riley Doherty (Tallahassee, Fla.) posted times of 32:34.77 and 33:23.94, respectively in the 10K.
Senior Perrish Goggins (Columbia, S.C.) came in seventh in the men's high jump with a leap of 2.04-meters (6-08.25), while freshman Thomas Perkins (Lugoff, S.C.) crossed the line in 17th in the men's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 57.69.
On the women's side, freshman Jasmine Polite (Goose Creek, S.C.) recorded a time of 4:52.87 in the 1,500-meter run.
