SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's and women's track and field team will make the short trip down Interstate 85 for the Furman Invitational on Saturday.
Saturday's meet will serve as the final tune-up for the Spartans as they travel to Jacksonville, Fla., next weekend for the Atlantic Sun Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships held on the campus of the University of North Florida.
"We have several athletes that are ready to break through and step up for us," said head coach Jimmy Stephens. "This is our final chance to prepare for the A-Sun Championships and with the shorter time frame this season, this meet is extremely important for our preparation."
The Spartans will be led at Furman by reigning A-Sun Field Athlete of the Week, Perrish Goggins (Columbia, S.C.). The junior earned his second-career honor after breaking his own school-record in both the long and triple jump. He posted a mark of 23-1.75 in long jump, surpassing the previous mark by half an inch. He leaped 45-10.75 in triple jump to improve school record by seven and a half inches.
"Our athletes are looking to improve on their times this weekend, but our main focus is to have one more strong effort before the conference meet," said associate head coach Carson Blackwelder. "I expect that our team will have a strong showing at this meet as their hard work and determination will show this weekend."
Following the trip to Furman, the Spartans will compete at the A-Sun Championships on Apr. 15-16, 2011.
