Twelve Spartans Earn All-Conference Honors to Highlight 2011 Indoor Season

Spartanburg, S.C. - Heading into the outdoor track & field season, USC Upstate takes a look back at the 2011 indoor season and looks to build on the success and momentum from the winter.

Upstate capped a strong indoor season with a strong effort at the 2011 A-Sun Indoor Track & Field Championships. Two Spartans took home A-Sun titles, while 12 Spartans were named to all-conference team.

Leading the way were Gilbert Kemboi (Eldoret, Kenya) and Mike Meissner (Cottage Grove, Minn.). Kemboi defended his conference championship in the 5,000 meters, setting a meet record with a time of 14:43.81. It was his third individual championship in the indoor conference meet, adding to the wins in the 5,000 and 3,000 meters in 2010. He was a first team all-conference selection.

Meissner is the defending champion in the 400 meters at the outdoor championships and proved that he can win indoors as well. He claimed the 400-meter championship in the 2011 inddor conference meet, breaking a school reocrd with a time of 49.44. He was a first team all-conference selection.

On the women's side, Joan Tangwar (Eldoret, Kenya) claimed a third-place finish in the 5,000 meters and earned third team all-conference honors.

While Kemboi, Meissner and Tangwar led the way for Upstate, nine other Spartans earned all-conference honors and are listed below...
