Volleyball Preview:  at Gardner-Webb, Winthrop

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate volleyball team hits the road this weekend to face the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs and Winthrop Eagles in a pair of Big South Conference matches.

The Spartans will face Gardner-Webb on Friday evening at 7 p.m. and Winthrop on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.

USC Upstate (10-15, 5-5 Big South) enters the weekend coming off of a 3-0 victory against Limestone College in its non-conference finale on Tuesday. Lily Dempsey led the Spartans with a match-high 11 kills while Madison Haake posted her 14th double-double this season, and 62nd of her career, on 25 assists and 11 digs. Payton Duncan contributed a match-high 12 digs. Gloria Ikenegbu had a team-high eight total blocks consisting of two solo and six assisted. USC Upstate also held an opponent to a negative hitting percentage for the first time this season as Limestone finished at -.060 for the match. 

Emily Russell leads the team this season both offensively and defensively with 216 kills and 99 blocks. Haake adds 806 assists and Duncan 310 digs. Russell is second in the conference in blocks while Haake is third in assists and Duncan 10th in digs.

Gardner-Webb enters the weekend with a 7-16 overall record and 1-9 Big South mark while Winthrop sits at 11-11 on the season and 7-3 in conference play.

The Spartans return to action next weekend, Nov. 2-3, hosting Campbell and Hampton in their final home matches of the season.
