Volleyball Preview:  UNC Asheville

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate volleyball team closes out a three-match homestand on Tuesday evening when it hosts the UNC Asheville Bulldogs at 6 p.m. from the G.B. Hodge Center.

USC Upstate split a pair of conference matches last weekend falling 3-1 to Winthrop before defeating Gardner-Webb 3-0 on Saturday evening. The Spartans recorded double-digit blocks in both matches highlighted by 13.0 against Gardner-Webb. Madison Haake registered her 10th double-double of the season, and 58th of her career, against Gardner-Webb on 32 assists and 11 digs. Gloria Ikenegbu and Emily Russell had 10 or more kills in both matches. Russell led USC Upstate both offensively and defensively combining for 21 kills and 14 total blocks.

Russell leads the Spartans this season with 160 kills and 74 total blocks. She is currently fourth in the Big South in total blocks. Haake contributes 640 assists (third-best in the conference) while Payton Duncan adds 239 digs to rank 10th in the conference.

UNC Asheville enters the matchup with a 6-9 overall record and 1-4 mark in conference play. Cara Guthrie leads the team with 164 kills while Kailey Hackett adds 269 assists and Madisen Zyburt 252 digs. Cecilia Stack has contributed 45 total blocks. The Bulldogs are under the direction of eighth-year head coach Frederico Santos.
