Volleyball Preview:  at UNF Invitational

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate volleyball team will play its third tournament of the season this weekend traveling to Jacksonville, Fla. to face Furman, North Florida and New Mexico at the UNF Invitational from UNF Arena.

USC Upstate opens tournament play on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. against Furman, and follows with two matches on Saturday versus North Florida (1 p.m.) and New Mexico (4 p.m.).

The Spartans are coming off their first victory of the season on Wednesday evening with a 3-0 sweep of North Carolina A&T in their home opener. USC Upstate compiled a season-best .264 hitting percentage in the match while limiting the Aggies to a .039 clip. Lily Dempsey led the team offensively with nine kills to go with eight digs, while Madison Haake just missed on a double-double with 32 assists and nine digs. Payton Duncan contributed 11 digs and McKenna Kirkpatrick tied her career-high of five assisted blocks.

Kirkpatrick leads the team this season with 49 kills and is tied with Emily Russell for the team-lead at 17 total blocks. Haake has dished out 209 assists while Payton Duncan contributes 97 digs.

New Mexico enters the weekend with a 3-3 overall record while Furman is 1-5 and North Florida 1-6.

The Spartans will play their final tournament of the season next weekend, Sept. 14-15, facing Savannah State and Georgia Southern at the GATA Challenge.
