Volleyball Preview:  North Carolina A&T

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate volleyball team opens the home portion of its 2018 schedule on Wednesday evening as the Spartans host the North Carolina A&T Aggies in non-conference play at 6 p.m. inside the G.B. Hodge Center.

USC Upstate opened its season with six straight road games capped last weekend against Tennessee Tech, East Carolina and New Orleans at the Golden Eagle Invitational. For the second consecutive tournament, Payton Duncan was named to the Golden Eagle Invitational All-Tournament Team. She was previously named to the Charlotte Invitational All-Tournament Team. Duncan finished the weekend with a team-high 42 digs. Madison Haake had a double-double in all three matches, giving her five for the season and 53 for her career.

Duncan leads the Spartans this season with 86 digs while McKenna Kirkpatrick has contributed 45 kills and Haake 177 assists. Defensively, Emily Russell has tallied 16 total blocks.

North Carolina A&T is 3-1 this season with wins over Alabama A&M, Alabama State and Jackson State. The Aggies are coming off a 3-0 loss at Elon on Aug. 28. Courtney Pitts leads North Carolina A&T with 55 kills while Edie Brewer has 134 assists and Andrea Laboy-Rivera 73 digs. The Aggies are under the direction of eighth-year head coach Hal Clifton.

USC Upstate leads the all-time series over North Carolina A&T 2-0. The Spartans defeated the Aggies, 3-1, in the last meeting back on Sept. 20, 2014 during The Spartanburg Courtyard Classic at Wofford.

The Spartans head to Jacksonville, Fla. this weekend, Sept. 7-8, to face Furman, North Florida and New Mexico at the UNF Invitational.
