USC Upstate Volleyball Earns NCAA Division I APP Distinction

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate volleyball program has received a public recognition of excellence in the NCAA Division I Academic Performance Program (APP) for having its multi-year NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR) in the top 10 percent of all competing institutions.

Each year, the NCAA honors Division I programs for excellence in multi-year APR performance. The recognition is part of NCAA Division I's academic reform efforts and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving top APRs within their respective sports. APRs not only track academic performance of the members of respective teams, but also the retention of the student-athletes at competing institutions from enrollment through graduation.

Achieving high academic marks is nothing new to the volleyball program. Under the direction of head coach Jennifer Calloway, the program regularly receives team academic awards from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). The program has now earned the NCAA Division I APP Distinction three times in 2013-14, 2015-16 and 2016-17.

The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams. Teams earning Public Recognition Awards increased to 1,284, up by 79 from the previous academic year, largely as a result of an increase in perfect scores. Of the teams recognized, 457 competed in men's or mixed sports, and 827 competed in women's sports. APRs for programs in the top 10 percent ranged from 985 to a perfect 1,000, and the number of teams posting perfect scores increased to 1,188, marking an increase of 98 teams from last year.

The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 academic years.

The NCAA is honoring the top 10 percent of APR achievers in each sport today and will release complete team data for every team at every institution on May 23.
