Upstate Defeats UNF 3-1 in Season Finale, Calloway Earns 300th Victory

Match Highlights

Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate head volleyball coach Jennifer Calloway recorded her 300th career victory Saturday afternoon as the Spartans picked up a 3-1 victory in its season finale over the North Florida Ospreys at the Hodge Center.

"This win really showed the character and the heart of these girls, and their resiliency to really get through all the lifetime adversities," said Calloway. "I think this a great moment for them to know that they can get through it and we can all get through it with a victory."

The Spartans won the match by scores of 25-19, 21-25, 25-23 and 25-20.

Kayla Eversgerd and Lexi Gober each tallied double-doubles on the afternoon for Upstate. Eversgerd finished with a match-high 15 kills to go with 14 digs for her 18th double-double of the season, and Gober picked up her 14th double-double on 37 assists and 17 digs. Shannon Weiss and Alexa Lagaly also posted double-digit kills with 12 and 11, respectively. Morgan Page led all players with 20 digs.

North Florida scored five of the opening six points to begin the first set to lead 5-1 on Eversgerd's attack error. The Spartans later fell behind 10-5, but rallied with an 8-3 run to tie the set 13-13 following Lagaly's kill. An attack error by Cameron McGuire put Upstate ahead 19-15 and then stretched its lead to 23-17 on Kimberly Ferguson's service error. The Spartans would go on to win the first set 25-19 on a bad set by Ferguson.

The Ospreys responded to win the second set 25-21 to tie the match at 1-1. Upstate held a slight 6-5 lead during the opening stages on Kayla Fessler's service error, and later sat tied 10-10 after Lagaly's kill. UNF answered with three straight points to lead 13-10 and extended its lead to 17-12 courtesy of Erin Edwards' kill. The Spartans cut their deficit to 22-19, but could not get any closer as the Ospreys won 25-21 following Morgan Van Alstine's kill to take the set.

Upstate raced out to a 13-3 run to start the third set capped off by an attack error by Kelly Koop. During that run, the Spartans recorded five straight points behind the serving of Lagaly. North Florida slowly trimmed away at the lead throughout the middle stages and trailed by just two, 18-16, to end a 13-5 run. The Opsreys stayed within three points over the next several plays until Upstate went ahead by five, 23-18, on Weiss' kill. UNF then cut the Spartans lead down to 24-23 after Abby Fesl's service ace, but Upstate held on for the 25-23 win on Lagaly's kill.

The Spartans opened the fourth set in similar fashion collecting seven of the first eight points to lead 7-1 following Gober's kill. Upstate held its largest lead of the set at 16-7 on Eversgerd's kill. North Florida stuck around and cut the lead to 17-14. That would be as close as the Ospreys could get as the Spartans extended their lead to six at 22-16. Koop's attack error sealed the set victory, 25-20, and gave Upstate the match win.

Fesl finished with a double-double on 30 assists and 16 digs for North Florida, while Van Alstine had a team-high 11 kills.
