Spartans Win First Ever Big South Match against Hampton

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team snapped a recent losing skid and picked-up their first Big South Conference win of the season with a 5-2 victory over Hampton University.

"Obviously everyone is pretty stoked to finally get this win," USC Upstate head coach Tim McLane said. "We didn't necessarily play that great as a team, but we did what had to be done to get the win and we stuck with what was working for us. I feel now that we've got this under our belt everyone can relax a little bit and get back to playing better tennis."

In doubles action the Spartans got off to an aggressive start in both the No. 2 and No. 3 courts. The No. 2 tandem of Elin Hellberg and Victoria Saldh easily defeated their opponents 6-1 to pick up their ninth victory of the season. At the No. 3 doubles court Noelia Acuna and Gabriela Cevallos picked up their fifth win of the season with a 6-2 defeat over their counterparts. The two wins in doubles action gave the Spartans an important 1-0 lead heading into singles action.

The momentum from the doubles portion of the competition carried over into the early moments of the singles portion of the competition. Saldh ended a recent losing skid at the No.1 singles position with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Yulia Kapitanova to give the Spartans a 2-0 advantage.

Acuna and Hellberg had a bit of hiccup on courts No. 2 and No. 3 to give the Pirates their only points of the afternoon. Maria Jardim ended her double-digit losing streak with a 6-1, 6-1 win at the No. 4 singles court to give the Spartans their third point of the match. Going into the final two courts the Spartans needed to win just one to secure the victory.

Ana Boza came through at the No. 6 singles position with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Julia D'Auvergne to secure the win for USC Upstate. Vale Zarama battled and came back from a set down to win the 5-7, 6-1, 10-8 over Viktoria Ljungman to put the icing on the cake for the USC Upstate win.

USC Upstate will be looking to carry this momentum into the final two conference matches of the season. The Spartans travel to UNC Asheville on Tuesday afternoon and host Longwood on Friday afternoon to close out regular season play.
