CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team had another difficult match on Saturday morning as the Spartans fell 4-0 to UNC Charlotte.
"In the doubles portion of the competition we kind of let Charlotte jump on us and control the matches, which is not ideal against a team of their caliber." USC Upstate head coach Tim McLane said, "In singles play I thought everyone competed really well and I thought we did a good job of being aggressive and trying to force the issue against our opponents."
USC Upstate (1-17) got off to a bit of a slow start against the 49ers. The No. 1 doubles tandem of Maria Jardim and Vale Zarama fell 6-1 and the No. 3 doubles team of Noelia Acuna and Gabriela Cevallos also lost by a score of 6-1.
Despite being up a set on courts No. 1 and No. 6 the Spartans were unable to carry that momentum on to other courts. Acuna, Jardim and Elin Hellberg all lost in straight sets to their counterparts to give the 49ers a 4-0 sweep.
"All in all, even though we got beat, I was quite pleased with the tennis we played leading into a big conference match tomorrow vs Hampton," McLane responded.
The USC Upstate women's tennis team will be back in action tomorrow morning against Big South Conference opponent Hampton at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
