Spartans Falter against Winthrop

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team was stunned by the top team in the Big South on Tuesday afternoon as Winthrop completed a 7-0 shutout of the Spartans at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.

"I would first and foremost like to thank all our student athletes and coaches who came out and supported us today, it's nice having a big crowd out here." USC Upstate head tennis coach Tim McLane said, "I thought we played a really good doubles point and we had chances to win the point going into singles competition. We let the doubles point affect us in singles action, Winthrop is a really good team and you have to be at peak performance to beat them. Will travel to Radford tomorrow afternoon and battle again."

In doubles action the Spartans lost the No. 1 doubles court 6-0 and had an opportunity to win at the No. 3 doubles court. Unfortunately, the Spartans lost 7-6 at the No. 3 court giving Winthrop the early 1-0 lead. Singles action was not much better as the Spartans were unable to take a single set against Winthrop.

The USC Upstate women's tennis team will travel to Radford University tomorrow afternoon for a Big South Conference match. First serve is set for 3:00 p.m.
