Spartans Road Woes Continue

DeLAND, Fla. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team lost 5-2 to Stetson University on Wednesday afternoon at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.

"Not only did we play an excellent doubles point today, but we have really been playing some good doubles the last few weeks, from a strategic standpoint." USC Upstate head tennis coach Tim McLane said.

The Spartans top doubles tandem of Maria Jardim and Vale Zarama easily knocked off their opponents 6-2 to give USC Upstate (1-11) and early advantage over Stetson. The No.2 doubles team of Elin Hellberg and Victoria Saldh collected a 6-4 victory in their flight to clinch the doubles point for the Spartans.

In singles play however, the Spartans dropped five of the six flights with almost all of them ending in straight loses. The Spartans lone win in singles competition came at the No. 5 position, Hellberg defeated Danielle Peele 6-4, 6-3.

"In singles I was very happy with the way we came out with great intensity during the points and I liked the way we played aggressive and tried to force the issue." McLane responded, "At the end of the day, we got out played by a better team, and sometimes that happens."

The Spartans will stay in the Sunshine State and battle UNC Wilmington at a neutral site location.
