SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's tennis lost 4-3 to Gardner-Webb on Wednesday afternoon at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
For the fourth time this season the Spartans have lost a match by a single point. USC Upstate is currently 1-9 and 0-3 in Big South Conference play. Meanwhile, Gardner-Webb improves to 2-3 and 1-0 in Big South competition.
"To be honest, we let this match slip through our hands today." USC Upstate head tennis coach Tim McLane said, "We got off to a great start getting the doubles and then we came out flat as a team in singles. I honestly felt we were the better team up and down the lineup, but when it came down to pressure points we simply didn't execute, and that's what cost us the match. We're going to get over the hump soon, we just have to trust ourselves and the work we've put in a little more."
For the third consecutive match the Spartans came away with the doubles point victory. The Spartans No.1 and No.3 doubles teams came away with victories over the Bulldogs and gave USC Upstate a 1-0 advantage heading into singles action.
Victoria Saldh improved to 7-3 on the season with a win at the No. 1 singles position. Elin Hellberg picked up the Spartans only other victory at the No. 6 singles position. Gardner-Webb picked up victories at the No.2, No.3, No.4 and No.5 singles court to steal the match away from USC Upstate.
The Spartans will stay at home with a match against South Carolina State on Saturday morning.
