SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team is all set for a high noon showdown with Western Carolina at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex on Sunday afternoon.
USC Upstate (1-4) and Western Carolina (0-2) are meeting for just the fourth time this decade. The Catamounts hold a 3-0 record in the previous three matchups played against the Spartans. The last time Western Carolina came to Spartanburg the Spartans played the Catamounts close but came up on the wrong end of a 4-3 decision.
The Spartans are coming off their worst loss of the year, a 7-0 sweep at home against Furman on Wednesday evening. No. 1 singles player Victoria Saldh (Gothenburg, Sweden) was the only Spartan to win a set against the Paladins. The loss was the first of the season for Saldh and fellow freshman Maria Jardim (Goiania, Brazil) as both of their records fall to 4-1 in singles competition. Sophomore newcomer Ana Boza (Canary Islands) is the only other Spartan currently holding a winning record in singles competition with a 3-2 record at the No. 5 singles position.
Western Carolina is coming off a 6-1 loss to Appalachian State last Sunday. The Catamounts only victory came at the No. 1 singles position from Jordan Strickland. Strickland battled back from a set down to take the final two sets 6-2, 6-4 to avoid being swept. Strickland is currently 1-1 on the season in singles play and 1-0 as member of the No. 1 doubles tandem for the Catamounts.
Jacy Smith and Julia Pezzuco also hold 1-1 records in their respective single flights. Unfortunately, they have not found much success on the doubles court with both holding 0-2 records. Savannah Taranto, Carli Deehr and Lauren McCall all hold 0-2 records in singles play.
