SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team lost to Furman 7-0 on Wednesday evening at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
USC Upstate (1-4) got off to a slow start in the doubles portion of the competition. Furman (5-1) took the pivotal doubles point with a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles and 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play the Spartans did not fare much better against the Paladins. No. 1 singles player Victoria Saldh (Gothenburg, Sweden) was the only USC Upstate player to win a set on the evening. Saldh took the first set 6-1 over Katty Weymouth but then lost the final two sets 6-2, 10-2. This was the first loss of the season for Saldh and it was her debut at the top of the singles lineup.
Noelia Acuna (Salta, Argentina) fell in straight sets to Julia Adams 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 2 singles flight. Meanwhile, Maria Jardim (Goiania, Brazil) lost her first match as a Spartan at the No. 3 singles position with a 6-2, 6-4 loss to Taylor Melville. Vale Zarama (Pasto, Colombia) lost in straight sets to Madison Dillon, 6-2, 6-0 in the No.4 singles match.
Ana Boza (Canary Islands) played competitively close to Georgie Walker before falling 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 5 singles position. Elin Hellberg (Malmo, Sweden) lost to Carol Kerman, 6-1, 6-4 at the No.6 singles spot to end the match.
The Spartans remain at home this weekend with a match against Western Carolina on Sunday afternoon. First serve is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
